The stores of canned food and small meals (soups and typical breads) are a must-see/must-try in the area nearby the river. This area is historically a night life district for mariners (mainly from Marine Corps from all over the world) and they would eat and drink in these stores before going to bad reputation bars. Nowadays it’s all renewed and it’s one of the trendy spots for night life in Lisbon. But it keeps this food stores and its traditions.

You have a street in Lisbon that is characterized by having lots of shops selling codfish and groceries. Codfish is always the main item because the Portuguese gastronomy is ‘codfish and the rest’. We normally say that we have a thousand ways to cook codfish. And it’s not far from the truth.

In Baixa (downtown area) you can witness the historical cafés (coffee stores) where Portugal greatest writers and poets got together. Its terraces to enjoy the streets or the main square, its pastry and architecture made of these buildings unique places that are still a part of the city’s identity.

Tascas is how we call small bars with rustic decoration located in the narrow streets of Lisbon that serve a lot of wines by glass mingled with different types of cheese, sausages, soups or typical fried snacks. The ambiance and the foods are a must-try.

In these establishments we have the tradition of drinking beer while eating different snacks/tapas of seafood like clams, shrimps, oysters and other small appetizers.

We also have an ‘upgrade’ called Marisqueiras which is a concept that initiated in middle of the 20th century and where you can eat a lot of snacks, drink beers and have live lobsters or spider crabs exposed on an aquarium for you to choose and eat cooked.

These shops are specialized in all types of sweets, pastries and cakes. Here you’ll try a lot of sugar, eggs and sweetness. And it’s almost impossible to resist. We’ll talk after you see the showcases.

It’s a lupine bean that we eat a lot while drinking beer. In almost every ‘Cervejaria’ or ‘Tasca’ you can ask and eat it.

It’s a type of Grappa (like the Italian) that we drink after the expresso. It has a very high alcohol percentage so it’s recommendable to try it with high moderation.
