Our Recommendations

Lagos Fortress

In 1600 the coast was under regular attack of pirates and corsairs. This led to the construction of a string of forts along the coast. The rectangular shaped fort has a small drawbridge to enter from the land and thick carved stonework walls. Within the courtyard sits a chapel dedicated to Santa Barbara, patroness of the artillerymen and miners, which is decorated with tiles.

St Anthony Church

The baroque gilded woodwork decoration of this Church is one of the finest in Portugal. The walls are covered in 18th century blue and white tiles. The entire church is crowned by a wooden vaulted ceiling. The rigorous sense of perspective gives an enchanting impression of reality.

Ponta da Piedade

This fascinating coastline is considered one of the most beautiful natural features in the area with the cliffs of the headland carved into rock pillars, natural tunnels and hidden grottos. These golden sandstone cliffs of misshaped angles stand at stark contrast to the deep turquoises and greens of the sea waters. It’s simply stunning.

Sagres Fortress

This uniquely designed fort protected the town from raiders from North African. It was from here that Henry the Navigator devised his 15th century expeditions to the uncharted seas around the western side of Africa, which heralded in the golden era of Portugal exploration. Sagres fort is not a classically constructed fort, it is more a large wall that divides the mainland from the headland, with the other three side protected by 60-meter-high cliffs. Inside fort’s walls is a giant wind compass that was used to aid early navigation and a small chapel.

Alternative Options

Portimão

This town has a long fishing tradition that developed particularly between the 19th and 20th century with the canning industry and tourism. You shouldn’t miss the Senhora da Conceição Church built on the top of a hill and standing out in the city skyline. Although it was badly damaged by the 1755 earthquake it retains its beautiful original gothic portal.

Ferragudo

This picturesque fishing village located on the opposite side of Portimão with which once shared responsibility for defending this stretch of coastline. The fortresses on either side could establish a crossfire to defend from any naval attack. Nowadays it’s a summer area with amazing beaches.

Carvoeiro

According to historical sources, the name of the village derives from an old name for a fishing village of the Arab-Medieval period. The area where Vila do Carvoeiro is located has a long history of military and pirate attacks, having witnessed a series of naval combats. A dry and warm climate and breath-taking beaches make it an ideal destination for golf and water sports, or simply for relaxing.
