Our Recommendations

Pena’s Palace

This Palace represents one of the best expressions in the world of the 19th century architectural Romanticism. It was the first romantic Palace, having been built 30 years before the other known romantic Palace in Baviera. Its gardens with unusual tree species in Europe make the perfect complement to the beauty of Pena’s Palace.

Historical Center

In here you’ll have almost a walk to the past. The narrow streets along with the National Palace and the view of Pena’s Palace and Moorish Castle on the top of the hill give it a fairytale village ambiance.

Regaleira Palace

The Palace is decorated with gothic turrets, carved gargoyles and other ornate features. But the true wonder are the grounds that cover 4 hectares and were inspired by the owner’s mystic ideologies. There are references to the Knights Templar, to free masons and dark alchemy. the Initiatic Well is the strangest feature and more mystic feature. In the bottom you’ll connect to a series of tunnels that run to the gardens.

Roca’s Cape

This is the westernmost point of mainland Europe. The windswept cliffs were believed to be the edge of the world up until the late 14th century and the spectacular, desolate scenery adds to the allure of the place.

Hell’s Mouth

Here you’ll see an interesting cliff formation close to Cascais, which has been given an overly dramatic name of Hell’s Mouth. The ceaseless pounding of the Atlantic Ocean on the cliffs chiseled out a small cave, which subsequently collapsed forming a small bay and natural arch.

Cascais

Historically, Cascais was a minor fishing village, until King Luís I choose it as his royal summer retreat. After that the high society of Portugal turn in constructing lavish villas, very ornamented architecture and exquisite gardens. Today Cascais is an elegant fusion of decorative 19th-century architecture, traditional Portuguese charm and outstanding tourist facilities, which together creates a magnificent holiday destination.

Estoril

Estoril is where the rich, famous, and even royal Europeans escaped to during WWII, as Portugal remained a safe, neutral country. Grand hotels and Europe’s biggest casino were built to welcome them, and that’s where Ian Fleming got the idea for the James Bond character. Although the special agent’s birthplace is no longer as glitzy and glamourous, it remains a cosmopolitan town.

Alternative Options

Sintra National Palace

The Palacio Nacional Sintra is the best-preserved medieval royal palace in Portugal. The minimalistic gothic exterior of the palace hides a wonder of decorative state rooms. The palace’s long history has been intertwined with the fortunes of Portugal’s ruling nobility, who resided here from the early 15th through to the late 19th century.

Queluz National Palace

This Palace is one of the last great buildings in the Rococo style in Europe, it was built as a summer retreat. But after the fire that attacked the Ajuda’s Palace in 1794, it became the official residence of the Prince Regent of Portugal and his family. The royal family remained there until they fled to Brazil in 1807, due to the French invasions. The building it’s frequently called the Portuguese Versailles.

Moorish Castle

Located on one of the hilltops of Sintra the Moorish Castle is a fortress built in around the 10th century after the Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula. All along the paths encircling the castle, you can admire spectacular views over a unique landscape, with the town center, the Palace of Sintra, the Palace of Pena and, stretching out beyond these, the vast plains to the north and the Atlantic Ocean.

Museu Condes Castro Guimarães

This museum was built in 1900 by Jorge O’neill and it’s a classic example of ‘summer architecture’. The building features ecletic elements inviting visitors to enter a kingdom of fantasy and wonder. Its collection includes significant national and international paintings, furniture, porcelain and jewelry.

Azenhas do Mar

A viewpoint from which one can see the Sintra coastline.
It has a stunning view of the cliffs looming over the full majesty of the Atlantic Ocean flanked by the picturesque scene of the little houses adorned with blue, almost as if sculpted into the rock. In this idyllic setting the sea enters between the cliffs, forming small natural pools.
